From ecological dynamics grow several methods that share a family resemblance. The constraints-led approach asks you to shape three things: the task, the environment, and the individual, so that efficient solutions appear through the athlete’s own searching. Nonlinear pedagogy is the wider teaching framework around it, built on representative practice, careful changes to constraints, and the useful role of movement variety. Differential learning, developed by Wolfgang Schöllhorn, goes one step further and adds variation on purpose, so the body keeps adapting to fresh conditions. In recent years, researchers have also offered bridging theories that try to sit between the two main camps, or above them.
Two names are worth mentioning. The OPTIMAL theory, developed by Gabriele Wulf and Rebecca Lewthwaite, brings motivation and attention into the learning process. Professional Judgement and Decision-Making, often shortened to PJDM, gives coaches a way to choose the right approach for the situation in front of them, rather than committing to one of them always. Open, fast-changing skills pull harder toward ecological and game-based methods. Soccer, basketball, handball, and hockey in open play all ask the athlete to read opponents and space, so coaches design games and constraints that train reading and choosing under real pressure. Most good coaching lives somewhere in the middle, and it slides one way or the other with the moment.
Imagine a brand-new athlete who has never seen the movement before. That player usually needs a clear model first, closer to the traditional end, because you can’t explore around a solution you have never seen. Now think about safety. Some elements protect a joint from injury, and those you need to teach directly, whatever your favorite method happens to be. The personal details, such as a stance width or a hand position (in example for handball goalkeepers), belong toward the exploration end, where you can let the athlete try, ask them how it felt, and guide the next attempt. A Goalkeeping Example To Make It Concrete
Let me show you how all of this looks in my own daily work, so the theory turns into something you can picture. Take a low shot from 9 meters heading to the goalkeeper’s left low corner. There is a technical constant in this reaction: the push-off has to come from the opposite leg, from the right leg, to drive the body across toward the ball. Physics rewards this pattern so reliably that most goalkeepers settle into it once a task asks them for both reach and speed at the same time. I always teach this part directly, in simple words, and I also design exercises that pull the correct leg out of them under pressure. Now take the arm reaction on a save of a high shot from 9 meters. If the extended arm stays behind the line of the body, the angle strains the shoulder and the elbow when a strong shot comes. That element of technique (to position the reacting arm a little bit in front of the line of the body) protects a joint, so I teach that part very clearly and I teach that specific detail all my goalkeepers in the same way, and I don’t let a young goalkeeper find out that boundary through “figuring it out” by themselves, through pain or potential injury. But on the other side, the starting arms position in basic stance can be (and it should be) a little bit more personal and individual from one goalkeeper to the next, so there I let each goalkeeper try out a few different positions, I explain pros and cons if each position, and then I guide them toward what feels the most efficient for their body. Seeing how athletes learn skills through these three layers, the safety constants, the near-universal patterns, and the personal space, gives me a simple way to plan every single session, and the same three layers can do that for you in your own sport.
Bringing It Together

The two theories offer you a simple map: one built on the mind and the motor plan, the other built on the athlete moving inside a “living” tactical situation.
