Sliding Technique: Master One of the More Complex Goalkeeper Skills

The sliding save is a fundamental, yet highly specialized saving technique used by handball goalkeepers. It allows goalkeepers to cover low, fast-moving shots directed toward the corners of the goal. Executed correctly, the sliding save combines agility, precision, and body control, significantly improving goalkeeper effectiveness.

The sliding save reaction involves quickly extending one leg horizontally while maintaining body balance. The goalkeeper slides along the court surface, using the leg, hip, and arm positions strategically to cover the space and stop the incoming ball. Successful execution demands excellent timing, coordination, flexibility, and tactical awareness.

Each component of the sliding save reaction have to be accurately trained. Drills should focus on isolating movements, reinforcing correct biomechanics, and gradually increasing complexity through proper progression of exercises. At the beginning, coaches need to emphasize technical accuracy over speed, to ensure their goalkeeper master foundational mechanics.

Most young goalkeepers love using the “sliding” save technique – but only a very few do it properly. The biggest challenge is that they can see their idols, adult senior goalkeepers, performing that technique, and then they just try to “copy/paste” what they see. Often, without realizing what are the most common potential mistakes, or what kind of consequences those mistakes can leave on goalkeepers.

Young goalkeepers face increased injury risks due to incomplete physical development, which impacts their strength, flexibility, and coordination. Without these foundational elements, performing the sliding save technique too early can lead to serious injuries.

Sliding (or a “split save”) is not just a reaction – it’s a more complex technical save movement that requires proper mobility, strength, and activation in key muscle groups. It also demands:

  • Hip trajectory
  • Proper position of legs
  • Positioning and timing
  • Body posture and control
  • Proper position of the reacting vs. non-reacting arm

Why Should You Enroll in This Video Course?

HERE ARE THE EXACT TOPICS OF THE SLIDING TECHNIQUE VIDEO COURSE
  • How does the proper sliding technique look like
  • The most common mistakes when performing the sliding technique save reaction
  • The most important things to consider when working on sliding technique (position of reacting and non-reacting arm; proper trajectory of the hips during the sliding movement; position of reacting and non reacting leg and foot)
  • The importance and suggestions of exercises for proper preparation before starting to work on sliding (suggestions of exercises for the warm-up and muscle activation, which inevitably include flexibility, mobility and strengthening for the most targeted muscle groups in sliding movement)
  • Suggestions of exercises for proper steps of progression in training when working on the sliding technique (half split seated exercises, kneeling exercises and exercises that start from the basic stance)
